Risk factors for concussion

The structural and physiological differences in the developing brains of children compared to the fully developed adult brain requires different approaches to diagnosis, recovery assessment and the management of concussion.82 Children take longer to recover and are at increased risk of catastrophic injuries such as second-impact syndrome, where a player sustains a second concussion without fully recovering from the first, possibly leading to diffuse cerebral swelling and death.83 In a study of emergency department attendees in the US between 1978 and 2004, concussion was found to be more prevalent among rugby players under the age of eighteen than it was for adult rugby players.84 With respect to recovery, another American study found that thirteen-to-sixteen-year-olds took around two days longer, on average, to return to normal levels on measures of memory, reaction speed and postconcussive symptoms than eighteen-to-twenty-two-year-olds; seven or eight days depending on the measure against five or six days respectively.85

Gender is a risk factor with female athletes at a higher risk of concussion, likely to report more symptoms and to take longer to recover than males.86 Also the likelihood of sustaining a concussion is increased when a player has sustained a concussion in the past.87
